Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Effective April 1, 2019, the New Jersey State Police launched the new Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS). The Absecon Police Department is utilizing this system for all initial firearms identification card applications, replacement of lost or stolen firearms identification cards, and requests for pistol purchase permits. The procedures for FARS will be as follows:
- Visit the following website www.njportal.com/NJSP/fars *This portal is Owned/Operated by the NJSP and not affiliated with the Absecon Police Department*
- The Absecon Police Department ORI # is NJ0010100. Once the application is submitted the ORI # cannot be changed. All Fees are Non-Refundable.
- When completing the application, you will need the Name, Address, Phone # and Email Address of two (2) reputable references. Please advise your references that FARS (NJ Firearms Systems) will email them the questions to be answered.
- When applying for an Initial Firearms ID Card (FID) you will be asked to provide a photo. This must be a Passport-style photo with a white background. The Photo must show a full front view of the face and top of the shoulders square to the camera with No Filters or Effects.
- Additionally, Initial FID applicants are required to be fingerprinted. This must be done within 90 days of application submission. More information can be found in the confirmation email from FARS after the application is submitted.
- The fee for an Initial FID card is $50.00, and the fee for each Handgun Permit is $25.00. You will receive an email from Leigh Gadd () with payment instructions. Payment must be made in order for the application process to begin.
- If you have never been fingerprinted for a firearms purpose in New Jersey, you will need to schedule an appointment with IdentoGO by clicking here. If you have been fingerprinted before for a firearms purpose in New Jersey, you do not need to be fingerprinted again.
All Firearms Purchaser Identification Cards and Permits to Purchase Handguns are now electronic. You will receive access to your Firearms Purchaser Identification card in your approval email. You will receive confirmation of your E-Permits in your approval email.
The online application process is APPLICANT DRIVEN. Please ensure you have entered the best phone numbers and email address for yourself and your references.
**Once you submit your application to FARS, you WILL NOT be able to make changes!**
