Recreation
Absecon boasts a multitude of recreational facilities and activities for residents and visitors alike. Patrons will find paths for biking and walking, playgrounds, a boat ramp, and a myriad of athletic fields. Absecon is also home to the one and only South Jersey Field of Dreams, located within the Dr. Jonathan Pitney Recreation Park.
Throughout the year we host an abundance of community events like our Concerts in the Park series held in Heritage Park.
To help honor our proud patriotic heritage, the city offers a Veteran's Park and a 9/11 Memorial. A steel beam from the World Trade Center is a focal part of the memorial located in Heritage Park.

Public Works, Sewer and Code Enforcement Committee
Meetings are held the first Monday of each month in the Municipal Complex Conference Room at 5:00 pm
The Public Works Committee has legislative oversight responsibilities related to the activities and operations of the Public Works Department, including repair and maintenance of public buildings, grounds, streets and roads, parks and playgrounds, sewer facilities, including seeking funding sources and grants. The committee also has oversight over code enforcement operations.

New Jersey American Water – Routine Flushing begins May 3rd
This is an important notification from New Jersey American Water. Our crews will begin routine flushing of the water distribution system in your area beginning on May 3rd at 7:00 AM through June 8th at 7:00 AM to provide you with high-quality water service. When crews are working in your area, you may notice reduced pressure or discolored water. If your water is discolored, run the cold water taps only, at the lowest level of the house for about 3 to 5 minutes until the water runs clear. If discolored water occurs please also refrain from doing laundry during that time. In keeping with American Water’s focus on safety for both customers and employees, please do not approach our crews while they work. Community Updates from Chief Laughlin
Thanks to all for your continued support. The men and women of the Absecon Police Department are humbled daily by your gestures and conversations as we continue to serve you. As we enter spring and summer, I wanted to make some friendly reminders and tips as we welcome the warmer weather. Be mindful of bicyclists and pedestrian safety as well as children at play. We have a great community, but we must be mindful of their presence as we navigate our neighborhoods and conduct our daily routines. Please give everyone respect and yield to our neighbors. Speeding on our streets is unacceptable. Since the pandemic, we have received complaints about the speeders everywhere in town. We continue to patrol and conduct enforcement in the neighborhoods. Please be patient as we take all complaints seriously. As we continue to enjoy the outdoors and host and attend barbeques and parties please be mindful of the noise ordinance and respect your neighbors.
We have several upcoming events including Hooked on Fishing, National Night Out, Movies in the Park, and Creekfest. I encourage everyone to participate and volunteer to make all the events a pleasant experience. Invite your neighbors and come out and make new friends in the community. As always, we welcome any and all members of the community to our police department for a constructive and healthy dialogue, no matter what the issue or concern may be. Make sure your house is appropriately numbered and visible from the street for emergency services.
If you did not replace your batteries in the fall, spring daylight savings time is a great reminder to check smoke detectors for both operation and expiration. Smoke detectors should be replaced a maximum of every ten years. Keep your property locked and look out for your neighbor’s belongings. Please call us if you witness any type of suspicious activity. vehicle thefts are on the rise and are up 75% over last year. Remember to lock your car doors and remove the keys. Never leave your car running while shopping or conducting business and avoid leaving your car unattended if left on.
Please welcome our new police officers to our community. Our newest SLEO II Officer Edward Adams has been serving our community since the fall. A second SLEO II will be in training soon and full time Officers will be hired as we continue to fill retired positions. I would like to thank Captain Christian Stoll for serving our community for the past 25 years. Captain Stoll loved our community and will be missed by all. I would like to congratulate him on retirement and wish him the best of luck. He was both a great police officer to this community, but
more importantly a great friend.
I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming seasons with both family and friends. Remember ABSECON IS HOME! Our community is unique and we will continue to work together and keep our town safe.

Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT)
The Atlantic County Regional SWAT Team is a multi-agency, regional tactical team in Atlantic County commanded by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. The team is comprised of members from various police agencies within Atlantic County including the Absecon Police Department. The Absecon Police Department currently has one officer assigned to the county SWAT Team.
The SWAT Team is responsible for resolving situations requiring extraordinary police actions, tactics, or equipment. The goal of SWAT is to resolve high-risk situations while preserving life and limiting hazards to citizens, police personnel and suspects. The SWAT Team’s activities include, but are not limited to, the following missions: high-risk warrant service, barricaded suspects, hostage situations, surveillance and intelligence gathering, drug raids, dignitary protection, tactical operations, crowd control/riot duties and any other specialized operation outside the scope of normal patrol officer duties.
SWAT candidates must undergo a demanding testing process to be selected as a member of SWAT. The testing process includes approval from the officer’s Chief Executive at their agency, followed by a physical fitness test, firearms qualification, oral interview conducted by SWAT Team Leaders and a psychiatric evaluation. Officers are required to achieve high evaluations during the testing process and maintain those high standards throughout their time on the team. Officers accepted to the county SWAT team go through a year-long probationary period and are expected to pass the same physical fitness and firearms qualification standards each year as part of annual testing.
SWAT Team members attend regular team training including specialized training in areas of breaching barricades, less-lethal munitions, emergency medical aid, and sniper/observer duties. SWAT Team members are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergent situations within Atlantic County. The SWAT Team works closely with members of the Atlantic County Crisis/Hostage Negotiations Team to accomplish their missions.
